UNESCO’S WORKSHOPS BEGIN

On the first day of SYMUN 22 UNESCO, the tension among the participants was palpable, as most of them are beginners in this model. The workshop started with the chairs introducing themselves, followed by a short presentation by each delegate in alphabetical order. introducing their country and an interesting fact about them. Later, the delegates were shown a video explaining how the MUN (Model of United Nations) works.

In addition, the chairs used the workshop time to explain the rules of procedure to the delegates, including the working papers, motions, points, topics, and resolutions. Then, each of their roles was clarified as well as the mechanism that each discussion session will follow during the next few days of SYMUN 22. Moreover, the chairs answered any questions that the delegates might have about how this experience will work. Afterward, the chairs revealed to the delegates the existence of the gossip box, in which they can write a note to another delegate anonymously that will be read out loud. We bet that all of you are looking forward to read all of this gossip.

Right after, the chairs started with a roll call of delegations and thus began an informal discussion on pineapple on pizza, in which Egypt presented a motion to open the general speaker list, which was supported by the majority of countries. Then, the delegation from countries like the Netherlands, Jamaica, Poland, Israel, Ethiopia, and Japan (among others) became passionately involved in the discussion and gave their opinion on the subject. In this debate, the delegates had the opportunity to practice the different procedures to be applied in the debate so that the sessions of the next few days will be carried out properly.

Finally, the delegations voted in favor of ending the debate, and as this was supported by their majority, the session was adjourned. Then, they all headed to the subsequent cocktail
